This is an example of an SSAO and HBAO comparison with OpenGL 4.5.0 C. The SSAO approach is based upon John Chapman's improvement to Crysis' SSAO implementation and also used by Joey De Vries LearnOpenGL. The 2007 paper by Vladimir Kajalin used sample points from a sphere in screen space while John Chapman's used half a sphere, or a hemisphere, to sample along the surface normals for each pixel, sampling the model's position and normal from the geometry buffer. Both use the noise texture method which uses the sample count efficiently and prevents banding. This is further corrected by adding a blur step. HBAO is horizon-based ambient occlusion which was introduced by Bavoil and Sainz in 2008 at NVIDIA. It is a physically based algorithm and approximates an integral using only the depth buffer instead. Another difference is that HBAO uses a cheaper method called deinterleaved texturing which is different from the sample kernel method used to generate ambient occlusion. The downsides to HBAO is that due to performance reasons HBAO is rendered at half resolution, thus reducing the AO pixel count. This also causes flickering in some situations. GTAO, or Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion, is another version of AO based upon HBAO by Jorge Jimenez et al at Activision which alleviates these problems and introduces something called temporal reprojection and a spatial denoising filter. NVIDIA also improved upon HBAO and now uses HBAO+ which fixes these issues and runs about 3x faster than HBAO. I still think that SSAO is just as good today, and John Chapman's version should be called SSAO+ as it's a significant improvement from Crysis' SSAO. But there's many more variants out there such as SSDO, HDAO, AAO, LSAO to break your brain and even VXAO which is based on voxels, introduced in 2016. Here I rendered HBAO at full resolution and exaggerated the occlusion strength and radius for visual clarity. The models used are a backpack & ground with normals, albedo, metallic, and roughness texture and a smaller version of the 'Sponza' model off to the side. Well its time to release at least a video on the progress of this project. I have implemented OpenGL 4.6 on top of Mac OS Metal 2.3, I am sure there are other implementations out there but this is mine. One may ask why? Well I worked on the OpenGL framework for 10 years at Apple and I miss the simplicity of programming in OpenGL. I know its a big project and I don't expect to reach conformance but I wanted to make this for the community so OpenGL could remain supported on the Mac. I pulled gl.xml from the Khronos site, parsed the xml and created all the headers / exported functions / dispatch tables / private gl functions along with parsing the error and gl state structure definitions. Well that was 800+ functions and a load of work I didn't have to do. That left me with a base for implementing the vertex arrays / buffer objects / drawing and state parsing from OpenGL to Metal. Once that was done I hacked GLFW to work with my new interface using CAMetalLayers and MGL contexts.... I can compile GLSL 4.5 to Metal using the SPIRV tools (thanks! for the contributors of this). The demo shows VAO / VBO / Uniform Buffers / GLSL all working... it took a couple of weeks but this is a good start. There are a lot more drawing functions supported, but this is just a simple demo showing GLSL support. Once it gets more functionality I will publish it to Github for others to use for free, and possibly contribute to.

Comparative play of Doom 2016 between APIs using Steam Play on Linux. The recording overhead is quite notorious with OpenGL, as the game without capturing gameplay footage was constant 60 FPS (kind of with gsync, my monitor does not support higher than 60 Hz anyway). This overhead is not present with Vulkan, which speaks of its really high optimization, albeit topping my monitor's refresh rate.. Recorded with OBS and with hardware encoding via NVENC. You will notice screen flicker at the OpenGL loading screen, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the frame rate or what. System's specs, as usual: CPU: Ryzen 7 1800X Memory: 32 GiB Corsair Vengaence 3200 🤍3000 MHz (higher than that I run into stability issues... you know how temperamental first gen Ryzens are) GPU: Asus GTX1080 Strix 8 GiB. MoBo: Asus Crosshair Hero VI. On Fedora 28, kernel version 4.17.19, GNOME [S]Hell. GPU drivers 396.54 Some futher notes: You will see screen tear, known issue with the nvidia driver, especially running in composited desktop environments, I promise I'll test with a non-composited DE one of these days, but it does not botherme too much (unless when it is REALLY, REALLY bad, and these drivers can even make a video playback on youtube tear, so... Take it with a 5oz salt crystal)

This is an example of simulating rain droplets using OpenGL 4.5.0 core C. The technique here uses quad-billboarding as the falling rain is a single raindrop texture applied to a quad which is always facing perpendicular to the camera. As each droplet hits the ground, another quad is drawn at the surface but uses 2d-textured spritesheets to mimic the splash effect. The spritesheet is 5 frames long with a texture size of 1000 x 100 pixels and is calculated in the fragment shader. The speed of the splash animation is controlled using modulus counters. Lastly to add a bit more immersion a ripple ring is briefly seen to simulate a tiny wave effect at the surface of impact. Here I generate 6 thousand rain droplets in a specified area. The size of the rain droplets are a bit exaggerated for visual testing with gravity, friction, acceleration, and vertical velocities applied. Once each droplet hits the ground, its y-position is reset up at a specified value and the cycle continues. A more practical approach would be to use SSBOs or a shader storage buffer object to do all the calculations on the GPU side using the single-staged compute shader. This would allow for an immense amount of rain droplet particles to run in parallel. Another nifty idea would be to create rain droplet particles surrounding the camera by some radius value. Therefore, wherever the camera moves, the entire rain system follows with it thus making it seem as if its raining everywhere. This may improve efficiency as well as much less rain particles would be required to achieve this same effect. Years ago I did rain particles when I was into 2d programming with SFML C which you can see here: 🤍 Other features implemented are rotating skybox cubemap, multi-texturing using blendmapping for ground, anisotropic filtering 4x, rain sound effects, ImGUI, stbi for texture loading, and FreeType for displaying data info. You may also notice toward the 2nd phase of the Cyberdemon battle that I'm unable to change weapon, fire or activate the secondary function of the Gauss Cannon and running around for my life. This is possibly because I tried to throw the Syphon Grenade while preparing to charge the Guass. Pressing R (switching weapon mod) seems to fix this.
