Aujourd'hui tutoriel d'utilisation et d'installation de Fail2Ban. Fail2ban est un programme de protection des serveurs Linux, son principe est simple mais efficace! Il parcours les logs des différents services en cours d'utilisations à la recherche d'erreurs (identification,accès page, etc...) afin de bannir les IP provoquant ces attaques. Fail2ban fonctionne avec le firewall de Linux Iptables, afin d'ajouter à chaque attaque détecté, l'IP dans les règles d'interdiction d'accès au serveur/services. Nous verrons ici la première partie des deux prévus. L'installation et la configuration de fail2ban sous Ubuntu serveur Linux. Installation classique avec : sudo apt install fail2ban Se rendre dans le répertoire de fail2ban avec : cd /etc/fail2ban/ Copier le fichier jail.conf en jail.local sudo cp jail.conf jail.local Modifier le fichier jail.local pour ajouter vos réglages : Ligne 50 ignoreip pour rajouter les IP à exclure des recherches Ligne 59 bantime temps de bannissement en secondes Ligne 63 findtime temps écoulé entre chaque recherche Ligne 66 maxretry nombre d’échec avant bannissement Ligne 113 enabled avec False aucune prison (filtre) n'est active, avec true toutes les prisons sont activés Partie Email: Ligne 130 destemail email destinataire, l'adresse ou vous voulez recevoir le mail d'avertissement de bannissement. Ligne 133 sender l'email émetteur du message Ligne 138 mta commande d'envois du mail, si serveur postfix utiliser mail et pas sendmail Ligne 214 action choisir action_mwl pour envoyer le maximum d'informations Configurer le bloc/filtre/prison sshd Ligne 224 bloc sshd rajouter les lignes : enabled=true pour activer la prison port=ssh,sftp,55000 en rajoutant votre port logpath = /var/log/auth.log chemin vers le logs contenant les réussites et échecs des identifications maxretry=2. Fin de la configuration. Relancer ou lancer fail2ban-client avec : sudo fail2ban-client start pour lancer sudo fail2ban-client reload pour recharger la configuration Maintenant vérifier les status avec : sudo fail2ban-client status et sudo fail2ban-client status sshd Tester votre prison sur votre log avec fail2ban-regex sudo fail2ban-regex print-all-matched /var/log/auth.log /etc/fail2ban/filter.d/sshd.conf

Fail2ban scans log files (e.g. /var/log/apache/error_log) and bans IPs that show the malicious signs too many password failures, seeking for exploits, etc. Generally Fail2Ban is then used to update firewall rules to reject the IP addresses for a specified amount of time, although any arbitrary other action (e.g. sending an email) could also be configured. Out of the box Fail2Ban comes with filters for various services (apache, courier, ssh, etc). Fail2Ban is able to reduce the rate of incorrect authentications attempts however it cannot eliminate the risk that weak authentication presents. Configure services to use only two factor or public/private authentication mechanisms if you really want to protect services. SSH configuration can be vulnerable to brute force attacks and than you need to fail2ban. This is simple installation. We will make video with advanced settings. A common activity that hackers and other website visitors with suspicious behavior deploy is running a script on your website to crawl through a pre-populated list of URI's. If your website sends a 200 or 404 will provide insights into the tech stack of your website plus if your site is allowing access to areas that should not be exposed to the outside world. This behavior and the rapid succession of requests can easily work against your server and slow down available resources, impacting your site, as well as other sites hosted on the same server. This behavior can easily be detected and blocked by using Fail2Ban. For this video, I provisioned a new server with cleavr.io, added a default WordPress site, and added my SSH key. Cleavr automatically installs and pre-configures Fail2Ban. But, capturing 404 mistreatments isn't pre-configured as this solution may not be desirable for a use-cases. However, it is a simple and straightforward option if this type of attack is impacting your servers.
