What do you do when your primary NAS is 85% full? You build a new server of course! Just in time for the release of FreeNAS / TrueNAS Core 12.0, I've got an all new NAS and 88TB of disks ready for some sweet ZFS goodness. But first... What am I drinking?? This is a pretty rare beer, as it's normally only available on draft, and not widely distributed. It's the Prince Charles Wee Heavy Scotch Ale from Santiam Brewing (Salem, OR). Clocking in at 9.2% and 25 IBU, this is the PERFECT beer to just sit down, read your favorite book, and enjoy for two hours. It's sweet, but not syrupy. Almost reminds me of a really good brandy in how you want to drink it. HIGHLY recommended. Check out the parts from today's build on Amazon, eBay, or AliExpress! CORRECTIONS: - at 2:18, I mention using identical drives. It seems like many people actually recommend using slightly different drives, or at least drives that weren't made at roughly the same time to better avoid both drives failing within a short time span of one another. - at 11:20, I use cloudflare's DNS(1.1.1.1), but this might cause issues with certain routers. Use your router's IP address here as well. I decided to give TrueNAS Scale a try on the HP Pavilion 500-c60 (I called it the 500-a60 in previous videos, which is essentially the same model). - Music (in order): "Hardware Haven Theme" - Me "Sunshower" - LATASHÁ(🤍 "If you want to" - Me "CRENSHAW VIBES" - GARRISON (🤍 "The Butterfly Nose" - GARRISON - Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 0:32 The System 1:34 What I'd Like To Beat 1:50 Upgrades 3:43 Some Issues Issues 4:33 Disclaimer 5:01 Installation 8:37 Setting an IP Address 11:33 Credentials - Group 12:08 Credentials - User 12:48 Creating a Pool and Dataset 14:34 Setting up SMB 17:00 Notes on Apps, VMs 17:22 Protection and Backup 18:02 Synology Comparisons 20:17 Closing Thoughts

We don't need to spend money if we have an old pc that can meet the requirements for us to be able to get a NAS up and running, however, if it needs to be upgraded we need to buy some parts to upgrade it, otherwise, we can also buy old pc on eBay that is like mine with a budget of 30$-50$. Building a 16TB freenas server, it doesn't go to plan...

Over the course of a few months, I upgrade my file server to hopefully help feed my file hoarding problems for awhile. Of course, in true Kyle's Videos fashion, the transition between the servers isn't as smooth as it could have been. Enjoy screaming at your monitors about everything I could have done better!

ProxMox and FreeNAS C-C-C-COMBO SERVER! With a bit of Chinese x79...

Thank You to Fractal Design and the new Vector RS for sponsoring this video. Click here for more info: 🤍 Or here to pick one up for yourself: 🤍 Is it possible to run a virtualized FreeNAS server inside a ProxMox VM, giving you the best of both worlds? Well, not only does it work, this build is insanely fast and quiet, making it quite possibly the perfect home server. But first... what am I drinking??? Two beers for your viewing pleasure today, as this build spanned multiple days. First up is the Stone Enjoy By 01.01.20, a 9.6% Unfiltered IPA from their Enjoy By series of beers. If you like very up-front hop profile and a bit of 'dank'ness to your beers, this one will be right up your alley. The night cap is a Fort George Waves of Silence Imperial Stout, clocking in at 9%. A very smooth, yet still quite boozy stout. Very approachable for dark beer novices, with a bit of a light roasty flavor and plenty of chocolate. The commands you will need to assign your disks to FreeNAS are: lsblk ls -l /dev/disk/by-id lshw -class disk -class storage To assign a disk to a VM, enter the following command: qm set ### -scsi$ /dev/disk/by-id/{DRIVE-ID} Where ### is your VM ID (in my case, 100) $ is the SCSI port you're using in the VM (SCSI0 is your boot disk, so anything 1-99 should work here, but each drive needs it's own unique port number) And {DRIVE-ID} is the drive listing from /dev/disk/by-id/ of each disk. For a more detail explanation, go here: 🤍 Check out the parts from this build on Amazon... MFU X79 Motherboard: 🤍 Intel E5-2680 8-Core 2.7GHz: 🤍 4x16GB DDR3 ECC-Registered 1866MHz Memory: 🤍 Silicon Power 256GB NVMe: 🤍 Fractal Design Define R6 Blackout: 🤍 DeepCool GAMMAXX GT (RGB was totally required for this build): 🤍 LSI SAS9211-8i SAS Controller: 🤍 SFF-8087 to (4) SFF-8482 Breakout Cable: 🤍 HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 Enterprise SATA Drives: 🤍 2-Pack 1 to 4 SATA Power Breakout Cables: 🤍 Arctic F14 Fans: 🤍 NOTE: In the video, we wound up with HGST 4TB 12.0Gb Dual-Port SAS disks. The controller and cabling worked for us, but do make sure you purchase the correct hardware for your drives and controller setup. Also note, if you want hardware passthrough (GPU, SAS controller, etc) to work in your setup, you need a motherboard that supports VT-d. This Chinese X79 motherboard does not. Software passthrough of hard drives works, but physical hardware assignment will not. Check your motherboard documentation to verify compatibility. We take an old, free IBM System x3200, fill it up with drives and modify an industrial timer to run it! Why? So that our data isn't connected to power when it doesn't need to be, decreasing stand-by power draw and increasing data robustness. We're finally building our own NAS / media server, and we're using Unraid with ZFS to do it. This first part is all about the hardware. Wendell from Level1Techs is helping. Sponsor: Get Linode Cloud Computing (🤍 - code GNEXUS20 for $20 credit) Support GN via the GN Store (modmats are now in stock and shipping!): 🤍 Wendell & Level1Techs can be found here (they're uploading a video from GN HQ also!): 🤍 Watch our tear-down of old technology with Wendell: 🤍 In this video, we'll be assembling our own DIY server. We're using the following parts for this build: ASRock Rack X470D4U2-2T AM4 Motherboard w/ IPMI (Amazon): 🤍 AMD Ryzen R5 3600 (Amazon): 🤍 SilverStone CS381 (Amazon): 🤍 Cryorig C7 cooler (Amazon): 🤍 AMD RX 5700 (Amazon): 🤍 Old NetApp disk shelf This two-part series will offer a loose guide to how you might go about building your own NAS for a DIY solution. We're using ZFS on Unraid for our DIY NAS, but this part focuses on the hardware and build. A major aspect of our build is a board with IPMI support so that we can remotely manage and boot (even from an off state!) the server, useful for business environments. You could also apply these basic steps to home theater and HTPC builds, where a home media server might be the end goal. For us, a small business file storage server was our goal, and so we called in help from Wendell at L1T. The build also uses an older NetApp Disk Shelf to give us expansion possibilities up to 32 drives, + additional SSDs. One of our other benefits is easy addition of Steam Cache to accelerate game downloads after the first download of a game. Unraid + ZFS DIY guide: 🤍 Like our content? Welcome to Part Two of the FreeNAS Your House series. In this tutorial, I show you how to get PLEX Media Server running on your FreeNAS Server. But first... What am I drinking? I went for a classic cocktail today, the Godfather. Equal parts Disaronno and Scotch over ice. One of my favorites. You need nothing besides the FreeNAS server you created in the last video to install PLEX. When you're done with this video, you should be able to stream your media library to every screen in your house. I'll teach you how to install the PLEX plugin, create a storage folder for all of your media, set up your library locations, and start streaming to your desktop, laptop, smartphone or Smart TV. I'm now on Patreon! Working on putting together projects, merch, rewards and content for Patreon backers, including access to my Discord channel. Everything I make from Patreon is going directly back into content and production for the channel. 🤍 Get a FreeNAS server without building it yourself: 🤍 Music: Shades of Spring Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License 🤍
