WebDAV means "Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning". It is an HTTP-based protocol that enables editing files in the cloud. Microsoft Windows operating systems have a built-in WebDAV client that can map network drives using the WebDAV protocol. If you have a WebDAV server, it can act as a file server in the cloud. You can map network drives from anywhere. Thus you don't need a file server in each office. Within a local network, Windows can map network drives to a regular file server using the SMB protocol. However, the SMB protocol does not work over the Internet. On the other hand, WebDAV is HTTP-based, so it was designed to work over the Internet. Mapping a WebDAV drive is very easy. You just need the WebDAV server name, and a username and password on the server. You can set up your own WebDAV server and make it accessible on the Internet, or you can use a cloud based WebDAV server hosting service like DriveHQ's Cloud File Server. We will use DriveHQ's WebDAV server as an example. Launch Windows File Explorer, right click on This PC (or Network), click More Options and then click Map Network Drive. Select a drive letter, and enter a WebDAV URL for the folder path. A WebDAV URL is like: https://ServerName/ or https://ServerName/FolderPATH/ Check "Connect using different credentials". Click Finish, then log in with your username and password on the WebDAV server. It will map a drive and open a new File Explorer window. You can right click on the drive name to change it to a more friendly name. You can map multiple WebDAV drives, e.g. you can map a subfolder as a new drive. After a drive is mapped, it is just like a local drive. Anybody knows how to use it. WebDAV does not synchronize data between the server and the PC, thus it does not use local storage space. WebDAV supports file locking for group sharing and collaboration. Other cloud storage services usually cannot support it. A regular WebDAV solution has a few weaknesses, mainly on performance, reliability and file size limit. DriveHQ's WebDAV service has been around for over 15 years. In this video, we will talk about how to setup a WebDAV server on Windows Server operating systems (Server 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012). The steps include: - Install IIS. - Enable WebDAV and add an authoring rule. - Enable "Basic Authentication". - Order or import an SSL certificate. - Configure HTTPS. - Create user accounts and folders, and set access rights. - Map a WebDAV drive and access files. - DriveHQ's cloud WebDAV server. 1. The WebDAV server feature is included in Microsoft's Internet Information Server. Let's install IIS first. Make sure to include "WebDAV Publishing" and "Basic Authentication". 2. Launch IIS Manager, navigate to the default website, double click on WebDAV Authoring Rules, then enable WebDAV and add an authoring rule. 3. Click the Default Web Site, double click Authentication, then enable Basic Authentication and disable other Authentications. 4. Click the root node of IIS Manager, then double click Server Certificates. For security, you need an SSL certificate to enable HTTPS. You can order an SSL certificate from a certificate vendor or import an existing one. The domain name of your SSL certificate must match with your WebDAV Server's DNS name. 5. Right click on the Default Web Site, then select Edit Bindings and add HTTPS support. 6. For each user, create an account on the server, then create a subfolder in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot folder. Set the subfolder's security to Full Control for the user account. 7. Now you can map a WebDAV drive from another computer (WebDAV Client PC) in the same network. The WebDAV URL is: https://SERVERNAME/ or https://SERVERNAME/FOLDERNAME Note the SERVERNAME is the server computer's DNS name. You can log in with a username and password on the server computer. You can access the mapped drive like a local drive. When opening a Microsoft Office file in the WebDAV drive, it will display a login dialog again. It is because Microsoft Office uses its own WebDAV client bypassing the mapped drive. DriveHQ's WebDAV service does not have this problem. To use it as a cloud file server, you need to make the server accessible from the Internet, and make sure it is fast, secure and reliable. It is much easier to use DriveHQ's Cloud File Server. Подключение в Thunar В системе обязательно должны быть установлены пакеты gvfs, davfs2 sudo apt install gvfs davfs2 1.Открываем Thunar и в адресной строке пишем URL: davs://webdav.yandex.ru/ 2. Ввод адреса в Thunar В появившемся окне вводим ваши логин и пароль от почтового ящика на Яндексе. 3. Авторизация на Яндекс.Диск Если вы все сделали правильно, то перед вами должен открыться ваш Яндекс.Диск, с которого можно читать/удалять/создавать файлы и папки, размером до 10-ти гигабайт 4. Добавляем созданную ссылку в закладки Thunar через клик правой клавиши мыши и переименовываем по желанию. Why you shouldn't use SMB over internet and what are the added security benefits of using WebDAV. Precisions for WebDAV over HTTPS for Windows : The certificate has to be signed by a trusted root certification authority (ex : Let's Encrypt), or use a self-signed en put the root CA in the trusted root certification authority store in Windows. Via Let's Encrypt 1) Generate a certificate signed by Let's Encrypt on the NAS 2) Assign the certificate to the WebDAV service on the NAS Via a self-signed certificate 1) Generate a self-signed certificate on the NAS 2) Assign the certificate to the WebDAV Service on the NAS 3) Export the certificate 4) Go to the Windows certificate manager 5) Import the file : syno-ca-cert.pem into the trusted root certification authority 6) Mount the WebDAV connection through the mount network drive feature on Windows NOTE : As most of the application packages, you have to configure the privileges : 2 Ways Allowed by default to all users : Control Panel Privileges WebDAV Server, Grant this privilege to all user by default : YES To specific users or groups : Control Panel User EDIT Your User Applications and check that you are allowed to use the WebDAV Server. Pourquoi il ne faut pas utiliser du SMB sur internet et quels sont les avantages en terme de sécurité d'utiliser du WebDAV. Précisions pour les connexions WebDAV en HTTPS pour Windows : Le certificat doit être soit signé par une autorité de certification racine de confiance (ex : Let's Encrypt), soit utiliser un certificat auto-signé, et mettre la root CA dans l'autorité de certification racine de confiance dans Windows. Via Let's Encrypt 1) Générer un certificat signé par Let's Encrypt via le NAS 2) Asssigner le certificat au service WebDAV sur le NAS Via un auto-signé généré par le NAS 1) Générer un certificat auto signé sur le NAS 2) Assigner le certificat au service WebDAV sur le NAS 3) Exporter le certificat créé 4) Aller dans le gestionnaire de certificats de windows 5) Importer le fichier syno-ca-cert.pem dans "Autorités de certification racine de confiance" 6) Monter la connexion WebDAV avec la fonction lecteur réseau de Windows NOTE : Comme la pluspart des packages, il faut configurer les privilèges. 2 moyens Autoriser par défaut à tous les utilisateurs : Panneau de configuration Privileges WebDAV Server, Grant this privilege to all user by default : OUI A des utilisateurs ou groupes spécifiques : Panneau de configuration Utilisateur Modifier l'utilisateur Applications et vérifier les droits à l'application Serveur WebDAV Panneau de configuration Groupe Modifier le groupe Applications et vérifier les droits à l'application erveur WebDAV

Hace ya algún tiempo que en mi caso las memorias USB pasaron a la historia en lo que a almacenamiento y transporte se refieren. Actualmente, solo utilizo las memorias USB cuando quiero instalar un Linux en un dispositivo, ya sea un ordenador personal o una Raspberry. No necesito transportar archivos de un sitio a otro. Mis archivos, los que quiero que estén siempre disponibles los encuentro directamente en la nube. Tengo los archivos en la nube con WebDav. Se trata de una solución tremendamente sencilla y cómoda, donde no te tienes que preocupar de si llevas el USB, o simplemente que el USB no se ha corrompido o lo has perdido. Tus archivos en la nube con WebDav siempre están allí, y además levantar tu servidor WebDav es tremendamente fácil, como verás a continuación. 🤍
