Nvidia briefly joined the elite club of US companies worth more than $1 trillion for at least a few hours thanks to AI boom. Chip maker Nvidia briefly joined the ranks as its share price shot up more than 5% before retreating. Shares had already jumped more than 25% last week after the company forecast "surging demand" due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Thirty years ago, Taiwan immigrant Jensen Huang founded Nvidia with the dream of revolutionizing PCs and gaming with 3D graphics. In 1999, after laying off the majority of workers and nearly going bankrupt, the company succeeded when it launched what it claims as the world’s first Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Then Jensen bet the company on something entirely different: AI. Now, that bet is paying off in a big way as Nvidia’s A100 chips quickly become the coveted training engines for ChatGPT and other generative AI. But as the chip shortage eases, other chip giants like Intel are struggling. And with all it’s chips made by TSMC in Taiwan, Nvidia remains vulnerable to mounting U.S.-China trade tensions. Nvidia is set to become the world’s largest company crossing a market cap of $10 trillion. For years, critics have been saying that it’s just a matter of time until Nvidia’s momentum runs out. As soon as the gaming hype dies down, Nvidia will perish. As soon as the crypto mining craze dies down, Nvidia will perish. As soon as the supply chain crisis dies down, Nvidia will perish. But, the reality is that Nvidia is at near all-time highs despite tech as a whole getting crushed.
