Do you ever feel like your tracks aren't 'glued together' enough? Like there's too much separation? Applying a compressor on your master track is a tried and true mixing technique to address this. Of course like with anything audio there are different philosophies. Some people like to apply mix bus compression at the beginning of the project... while other's prefer the end. In this video, I go over what mix bus compression is, and show you how one might apply it to a project for great glue, while not over-compressing and killing all your transients.

My colleague Steve DeMott did an article on 2-Buss compression recently. In this video, I take some of his ideas and develop them using Logic's powerful and flexible built-in compressor plug-in. As you add a compressor to a group, you will notice your song take a more consistent dynamic signature making your song sound more cohesive and “glued” together. The Logic Pro X compressor emulations are a fantastic addition to an already fully featured DAW, but how do they compare to their paid counterparts? In this video I put all the emualations to the test against plugins from Waves, Focusrite and Slate Digital to hear how they really stack up against plugins you would have to part with money to own. I compare: Studio VCA - Focusrite Red 3 Studio FET - Slate Digital FG-116 Classic VCA - Waves DBX-160 Vintage VCA - Slate Digital FG-Grey Vintage FET - Waves CLA76 Vintage Opto - Slate Digital FG-2A The stock compressors did an UNBELIEVABLE job, and in some cases were preferable to their paid counterparts.
