Cursor variables (variables declared based on a REF CURSOR type) offer some interesting advantages over "hard-coded" or explicit cursors (CURSOR my_cur IS ...), especially lots of flexibility and the ability to pass a cursor as a parameter or even the return value of a function. Hope you can help. 🤍 Slides 🤍 All SQL Server Text Articles 🤍 All SQL Server Slides 🤍 All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English 🤍 All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic 🤍 Relational Database Management Systems, including sql server are very good at handling data in SETS. For example, the following "UPDATE" query, updates a set of rows that matches the condition in the "WHERE" clause at the same time. Update tblProductSales Set UnitPrice = 50 where ProductId = 101 However, if there is ever a need to process the rows, on a row-by-row basis, then cursors are your choice. Cursors are very bad for performance, and should be avoided always. Most of the time, cursors can be very easily replaced using joins. There are different types of cursors in sql server as listed below. We will talk about the differences between these cursor types in a later video session. 1. Forward-Only 2. Static 3. Keyset 4. Dynamic Let us now look at a simple example of using sql server cursor to process one row at time. We will be using tblProducts and tblProductSales tables, for this example. On my machine, there are 400,000 records in tblProducts and 600,000 records in tblProductSales tables. If you want to learn about generating huge amounts of random test data, please watch Part - 61 in sql server video tutorial. The link is below. 🤍 Cursor Example: Let us say, I want to update the UNITPRICE column in tblProductSales table, based on the following criteria 1. If the ProductName = 'Product - 55', Set Unit Price to 55 2. If the ProductName = 'Product - 65', Set Unit Price to 65 3. If the ProductName is like 'Product - 100%', Set Unit Price to 1000 For the SQL code samples used in the demo please visit my blog at the following link 🤍 The cursor will loop thru each row in tblProductSales table. As there are 600,000 rows, to be processed on a row-by-row basis, it takes around 40 to 45 seconds on my machine. We can achieve this very easily using a join, and this will significantly increase the performance. We will discuss about this in our next video session. To check if the rows have been correctly updated, please use the following query. Select Name, UnitPrice from tblProducts join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where (Name='Product - 55' or Name='Product - 65' or Name like 'Product - 100%')

Cursors are the objects those allow us to access the data row by row from result set. Dynamic Cursors are update-able. The dynamic cursor will fetch the changes (insert, update or delete) on each fetch while cursor is open if any modification happened to original data in table/s. This type of Cursor is helpful when we want to extract the records from original table/s while cursor is open and we are still in process of modification of data or inserting new records and want to include them in cursor result set to perform operation. Dynamic cursors are scrollable (First,Last,Prior,Next,Relative) but absolute option does not work with dynamic Cursors. Blog post link for the video with scripts 🤍
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to create and delete stored functions and use cursors with a loop in the MySQL database. — Facebook: 🤍 — Featured Tutorials: — Connect MySQL In Python: 🤍 — Hi guys, this is Abhi from Gokcedb. In this video, you're going to learn how to use Cursors in The MySQL database. Let's start by looking at the entity relationship diagram. I have seven tables in my database right now, but in this tutorial, we'll mostly be working with the property table. Let's run a select query where we select the property name, property county, and sizing acres from the property table and limit the output to 5 records. Here, we got the output in a table format but say our requirement was to get the output in a comma separate version format. To accomplish that we're gonna use a cursor. Let's open the SQL file and look at the code. We start by setting the delimiter to dollar dollar so it doesn't interfere with the semicolon which is used for regular SQL statements. Use the create function function name syntax followed by the returns keyword and the data type of what this function will return. Deterministic keyword implies the character of this function. The meat of this function is defined between the beginning and the end markers. Here I'm using the declare keyword to declare a bunch of variables. For the property variable, I'm setting a default value of an empty string, and for the done variable. The default value is 0. Cur is the cursor variable that will be used for the select query. V underscore done, is the handler variable which will be set to 1 when the cursor reached the end of the table. Next, we open the cursor and label the loop properties underscore loop. Inside the loop, we fetch the cursor into the property underscore name, property underscores county, and property underscore size in acre variables. Next, we have the if-else block. If the done variable is set to 1, then leave the loop else. Set the properties variable to the concatenated value of property name, county, size, and acres. I'm using the end keyword to end the if block and the loop block. Ude close cur to close the cursor followed by the return keyword where I'm returning the concatenated value of v underscore properties variable. At the end of the file, we reset the delimiter back to a semicolon. Let's take a quick look at the MySQL Alias. I'm using the config file to pass in the authentication details. To execute the create function SQL file, input it to the MySQL Alias. Use the show function status keyword to check the status of your function. And if you want to look at the definition, use the show create function function name syntax. To call the get to underscore properties function, use the select statement. Here, you can see the output was formatted in a comma-separated version format. Finally, if you want to drop this function, use the drop function function name syntax. There you have it. Make sure you like, subscribe, and turn on the notification bell until next time.

Here's a quick overview of how to write and use a basic cursor in SQL Server's T-SQL. They are especially well suited to task-based rather than set-based processes that have to call an external function or resource on each row, for example calling a component to add data to a messaging queue or send an email. The downside to cursors is that their performance can be slow, so it's best to avoid using them on very large tables or when query performance is important. Cursors used to be one of the only ways of performing certain actions on every row in a table. However, be aware that there are alternatives, such as using a WHILE EXISTS loop or the more recent T-SQL Common Table Expressions (CTE).
