According to the most modest data, about forty thousand Dutch volunteers served in the elite troops of Germany. On June 21, 1940, the foundation of the SS Viking division was created in Holland - the WESTLAND regiment. The fifth division also included volunteers from the NORDLAND and Germany regiments. Unboxing the new 2022 John Deere 8R 410 by WIKING in 1/32 scale. Released mid January 2022, these John Deere 8R 410 arrived to the market in 2 variants which are identical aside from the packaging. John Deere dealer box and Wiking standard box. Both models I added to the scale model collection arrived in the dealer boxes at a cost of €85 and these will provide enough HP for all ploughing and sowing duties around the diorama. Wiking have made some changes to their packaging, the model is now placed inside what looks like an egg carton, replacing the moulded styrofoam case which can be assumed an environmental decision over cost cutting. One of the first things I noticed was the absence of a front weight which is a necessary item if attaching a large rear implement, this is definitely cost cutting not forgetting this model comes at a price of €85, it's not cheap. On the real tractor the hazard boards fold backwards, a feature Wiking included on their latest Claas Arion 660 & 650 models, however on this 8R these are fixed in place. Generally very well finished with a more weighty feel by comparison to other tractors from the German brand. Underneath the opening bonnet the detail is minimal and certainly not Wiking's best recreation of an engine especially when you look back at previous models they have released. An area that should have evolved over the years and not regressed considering prices have only gone upwards. Painted lights all round with the exception of the headlights, another item that is long overdue an upgrade given competitors have been doing it for years. The massive wheels are removable using the T-shaped tool provided, rear wheel weights and front hubs are magnetic and easy to fit, this is one of the best features introduced in recent years and one that I hope will continue. Inside the cab there is an opening storage box, a very nice feature to have and something which is new to the Wiking bag of tricks along with a command pro joystick and detailed screen. While not a perfect model, it is sure to be a very popular choice amongst John Deere fans and scale collectors and no doubt one that will fly off the shelves due to the huge following John Deere hold worldwide. Even with some of the cons I have mentioned are there also many pros. Rarely do I would add two identical models to the collection but in this instance I sourced a second piece and both will become the high horsepower work horses of the new diorama. "Sophisticated precision models with their well known richness in detail" is what WIKING said in their most recent press release. 2022 is going to be an interesting year for WIKING to see what direction they take going forward. Generally this is a nice model however closer inspection highlights many areas where that richness of detail is lacking. Functionality is their biggest advantage over the competition and should we see this decline in future releases it will be a sad day for the brand with the danger of simply becoming a Siku Pro line model. Through a series of metrics and statistics, Meik Wiking helps us measure well-being inequalities that lead to gaps between happiness and unhappiness indices. While most research focuses on happiness and quality of life, Meik invites us to reflect upon the other end of those numbers. Meik Wiking heads the Happiness Research Institute which gathers knowledge and theories on what defines happiness and life quality. Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, an independent think tank exploring why some societies are happier than others. He has recently published the book Lykken under lup – en opdagelsesrejse i lykkeforskningens verden (Happiness under the magnifying glass: a journey into the world of happiness research). With a background in political science and business, Meik has previously worked on sustainability for the think tank Mandag Morgen. It fits in well with the first video in the series covering a soldier named Gottfried’s war diary who served first in the 5. SS Division Wiking and then the 10. SS PzD Frundsberg. Gottfried, a German, was drafted into the Waffen SS in the spring of 1942 and went through basic training with Dutch volunteers in the Netherlands. Using plenty of background information to give context, we’ll follow his story during the advance into the Caucasus in 1942 and then, as a member of Frundsberg, during their defense around Normandy, their escape out of the Falaise Pocket, Operation Market Garden and other battles. Using entries from his war diary, associated rare film footage, his personal photographs, graphic translations, and at the end of the video we’ll take a look at a situational map showing the SS Div. Wikings positioning as Gottfried was finishing basic training so stick around, it’s worth it. On May 4th 1942 I joined the Waffen SS. I said goodbye to my parents at the train station and took an express train west traveling over Frankfurt am Order, Berlin, Braunschweig, Hannover, Bielefeld, and ending up in Unna, where we stayed for three days. Crossing the border at Emmerich in Holland, we then travelled on to Arnhem. There we were assigned to Companies, with me going to the 3rd that was heading for Doesberg. This is a photograph of the Maurits Kazerne in Doesburg that Gottfried took just as he arrived and this photograph was taken of him that day. In Doesburg I went through 10-weeks of basic infantry training which presented no difficulties whatsoever for me. The basic military training of the Waffen SS during the war was the same as that of the normal German Heer. Heavy emphasis put on instilling military discipline, physical fitness, weapons proficiency, close combat and group tactics. Waffen SS soldiers did however generally receive considerably more political and racial indoctrination, or “Weltanschaulicer Unterricht”. Complete obedience to the hierarchy of command was strictly enforced. As with all armies, individuality was systematically replaced by group-think. The SS Motto was Meine Ehre heisst Treue, or My Honor is Loyalty. Physical fitness, like obedience, was of high priority from the very beginning. The exercise was often competition based and in groups which developed the soldiers will to win and built the camaraderie and aggressiveness that would eventually be necessary for involvement during in-formation maneuvering and combat. This photograph from Gottfried's collection shows the handball team. And of course plenty of time was spent by the soldiers getting acquainted to and becoming proficient with the weapons they would be using. Notice how they balance a beanbag on the butt of the rifle to get a feel for the weapon. Here we see Gottfried and his squad with a light machine-gun. The typical squad was made up of 9 infantrymen and one squad leader. In this lecture the Waffen SS trainees are being introduced to Germanic cultural roots shared by north European countries. Here, specifically, they are learning about the similarities between the related Germanic languages. The young soldiers were also indoctrinated with the theories of so-called racial hygiene and the racial hierarchy. Leaflets such as “Der Untermensch” were published by the SS and used in lectures as teaching materials. They tended to be filled with photographs contrasting people with exaggerated physical features. The idea was to secure an "us vs them" mentality. Each man in the squad, except for the machine gunner, his assistant and the squad leader was armed with a Karabiner 98 Short. The squad leader had an Mp 40. Each of these stacks is made up of the weaponry of one squad. The Squad in offensive actions would not act alone, but rather in cooperation with the other 3 squads in the platoon. Set offensive and defensive maneuvers were drilled repeatedly until each member of the squad knew his role instinctively. Here we see Gottfried with his squad during field exercises. This rare clip from 1943 shows graduates of Dutch training facility of the Waffen SS being sworn in. They are swearing personal allegiance to Adolf Hitler. And here we can see Gottfried at his swearing in ceremony. In June of 1942 the advance into the Caucasus had begun. The SS Div Wiking was tasked with taking Rostov and Gottfried would soon be heading East.

The all new John Deere 7310R with Dual wheels by WIking. SHOP 🤍 Following on from the 2018 1st edition 7310R tractors video , it made sense to look at the latest 7 series John Deere by WIking. This tractor arrives in a larger box, making space for those huge rear wheels, front weight, and wheel removal tool. As a big fan of the last John Deere 7310r I was certainly keen to find one of these not only for myself, but to show all of you also. This 2019 tractor comes with all the same functionality as seen previously in the older model except for one difference. The previous edition had a full set of removable wheels, whereas this dual wheel version only allows us to remove the rear set. Behind the outside set there is a spacer which provides the correct gap between both rims, and with the outside set removed I found it best to flip this spacer around and cap it off with the magnetic hub centre. Otherwise this John Deere is exceptionally well finished. Inside the cab the drivers seat rotates 80 degrees with the passenger seat folding upwards. As per Wiking standard, the front and rear linkage are fully adjustable with the bonnet raising up to show us a glimpse of the 310 Hp engine. If you are a John Deere fan this is certainly a must have, Wiking have historically produced the best 1/32 John Deere replicas to date and with the soon to be released 9RX just around the corner, there is not doubt that this standard will continue.
