Die Pulsweitenmodulation, kurz PWM ist eine digitale Modulationsart, bei der die Spannung in schneller Abfolge ein- und abgeschaltet wird. PWM ist grundsätzlich eine Rechteckwelle mit einer variierenden Einschalt und Ausschaltzeit bei einer konstanten Frequenz. Anstatt Komponenten über die Höhe der Betriebsspannung zu steuern, wird per Pulsweitenmodulation einfach die Spannung für eine kurze Zeit unterbrochen. Über dieses Verhältnis zwischen den Spannungsimpulsen und Pausen kann man die gewünschte Effektivspannung erzeugen….. Here is the basics of how an ESC works. We talk about electronic commutation within an ESC and we spend quite some time talking about PWM. Note that we are talking about the output drive of the ESC and not the input signal. PWM stands for pulse width modulation. It is an important function within an ESC in order to provide the speed variation between 0 and maximum RPM. Some ESC manufactures allow you to control the PWM frequency rate. But does this mean you should adjust the PWM frequency of the ESC? The common questions here are does the frequency rate allow the motor to perform faster? Output Higher RPM? Increase Efficiency? The quick answer is, you aren't going to gain more RPM by adjusting the PWM function. Higher PWM settings can increase responsiveness and smoothness for acceleration of the motor. In general the motor doesn't mind higher PWM settings, however the ESC will be doing more work to switch more rapidly. Required PWM settings is highly dependent on the application. If you want to know where you should be in terms of the setting, use the formula explained in the video. Otherwise if you are unsure, try out the ESC's default settings for your application and only make changes if you run in to issues. More details in the video!

Ever since I made a video about my transistor based PWM controller nine months ago, it bugged me that the circuit only worked with a MOSFET to switch the load, not just another simple transistor. After all the idea behind the whole thing was to avoid any fancy extra components like the 555 timer in favor of parts that can easily be salvaged from e-waste, so being quite a bit rarer than transistors, MOSFETs would definitely better be optional not obligatory. Luckily while designing the circuit for my DIY soldering station I figured out a way to make it work with transistors only - But alas! Another much newer channel beat me to it, and to my dismay his solution was even better than mine! So in this video we analyze both versions of the circuit and take the best of each to create one hopefully perfect PWM generator! Here are all the links: The video on my second channel where I calculate all the component vaues: 🤍 And here the schematics: it's worth noting that I did a couple errors calculating the resistors originally, so all the versions you can download below are recalculated and revised, thats why there is now only one value per component. You still have some leeway, but if you want to use other transistors than direct equivalents you'll need to change some resistor values to accommodate the current gain of those specific transistors.
