Big thanks to our friend Al-Muqaddimah for his help with this video. The look of this video's maps is an homage to his wonderful mapmaking style. For more Islamic History, check out his channel here: 🤍 From the coast of Tunisia across the Straits of Gibraltar, over the Atlas Mountains, and east to the Nile of Egypt, Ibn Khaldun had certainly seen history at work. That experience came in handy as he wrote The Muqaddimah, a genre-defining masterwork of Historiography — not just retelling the events of the past, but explaining their causes and effects through the lens of human behavior and sociology. Ibn Khaldun was, without a doubt, one of the greatest thinkers in human history. He has been quoted by many respected people throughout history. Ronald Reagan even tired to use him to justify his moronic economical concepts. Let's not let that ruin Ibn Khaldun's reputation. He was... I have no words. Honestly, no words. That dude was awesome! Sorry for the delay in this video. I was busy with quite a few personal things. From now on, I'll try to maintain a schedule. Additional Facts: 1) William McGuckin de Slane, an Irishman, was the key interpreter for the French during the colonization and he translated many of Ibn Khaldun’s and other Africa and Arabic works into French. 2) Almohad Caliphate was at its greatest extent around 1212 CE under the rule of Muhammad al-Nasir. Almohad Caliphate fell in 1269 CE. 3) The image is from an exhibition named, “Ibn Khaldun: Peak and Decline of the Empires”, held in Seville, Tunis and New York in 2006 to commemorated the anniversary of his death. 4) Mamluk Sultanate managed to defeat the Mongol Horde at Ain Jalut in 1260 CE (just two years after the sack of Baghdad), stopping them from advancing further and proving that Mongols do, in fact, bleed. In the world’s most prestigious universities, professors teach us that Karl Marx was the father of sociology, that Herodotus was to thank for historiography, and that Adam Smith was the founder of modern-day economics. What if we told you that the man who founded and mastered all these disciplines was actually an Arab Muslim Andalusian scholar known as Ibn Khaldun? We narrate the story of how he did it all. ‘School of Thought’ is the IEA discussion series based on ‘101 Great Liberal Thinkers’ by Dr Eamonn Butler. Each week, Syed will discuss classical liberalism’s role in bringing the modern world into existence, profiling the lives and ideas of some of the leading thinkers on individual liberty and examining their relevance today. In this week’s episode, Syed sits down with Benedikt Koehler, an economist and historian of economic thought in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, to discuss Ibn Khaldun. Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) understood how exploitation, by governments or others, was a huge disincentive against work, saving and progress. He wrote “[a]ttacks on people’s property remove the incentive to acquire and gain property. People then conclude that the only result of acquiring property is for it to be taken away again. When the incentive to acquire property is gone, people no longer make efforts to acquire it. The extent and degree to which property rights are infringed upon determines the extent and degree to which the efforts of the subjects to acquire property slacken.” The IEA's digital content is available for any and all to view, for free. Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah (The Nietzsche Podcast #65)

Follow the podcast on Spotify: 🤍 Support the show on Patreon: 🤍patreon.com/untimelyreflections From all accounts, Nietzsche did not read nor comment upon the work of Ibn Khaldun, outside of a few remarks from Schopenhauer in one of his essays that Nietzsche might have read. But what we find in his Muqaddimah is a theory of cyclical history, in which many of the key principles of Nietzsche's political philosophy would find agreement. Ibn Khaldun was a historian from North Africa whose work sought to explain why it was that the same pattern seemed to repeat ad infinitum. The Bedouin desert tribes would overwhelm one of the settled cities of the Mediterranean, from time to time, then establish a new city there. For a time, the culture of the new city would be like that of the Bedouins in the desert. But, eventually, a sedentary culture set in, over the course of several generations, and the inhabitants grew complacent, became incompetent, and eventually found themselves overthrown by another desert tribe, and the process would then repeat. In his studies, Khaldun arrives at the concept of asabiya, or the capacity for collective power, which can be very useful for a Nietzschean perspective on social power structures. This concept of asabiya means, literally, 'group feeling', and describes the extent to which the individuals feel themselves to part of a unified, coherent group, and are thus able to act as instruments of the group, and coordinate their actions as a team. Asabiya increases in harsh conditions, and declines in conditions of luxury, and thus the cycle of empires is set into motion - "This is how God proceeds with His creatures." Just as Nietzsche suggests the idea of all things returning eternally, Khaldun's writing brings this idea into the historical and political sphere. But Ibn Khaldun is significant because he presents this not only as a poetical idea, but as a pattern based on observable facts. There are many, many observations and anecdotes in the Muqaddimah, and we will not be able to cover it all, so we shall focus on the points most relevant to the ideas covered this season. This will be our first journey into a work outside the Western Canon, into one of the most important thinkers of the Near East. Join me in exploring the dynamics of history, as we jump into the basic ideas of the Muqaddimah.  #nietzsche #philosophy #philosophypodcast #historyofphilosophy #ibnkhaldun #muslimphilosophy #arabphilosophy #history #middleeast

Ibn Khaldun On Existence: Multiplex Ontology | Prof. Dr. Recep Şentürk

#IbnKhaldun #islam #history It is generally believed that sociology originated in Europe in the 19th century and the paternity of the discipline is commonly attributed to the French sociologist August Comte. However, reflections of a sociological nature were observed and found in the work of 14th-century North African historian and philosopher Ibn Khaldun. However, such contribution of Ibn Khaldun is little acknowledged by European scholars in their works. Therefore, this lecture series attempts to examine how Eurocentrism is embedded in the writing of the European scholars and unpacks the contribution of Ibn Khaldun in the growth of Sociology. The perspective of European scholars are mainly Eurocentric and parochial in their accounts on culture, language and other aspects of non-European society. Therefore Ibn Khaldun’s contribution to the field of sociology is largely ignored, though his contributions dealt with society and human character, political organization and government, differences between rural and urban populations, kinship, social solidarity, and the interplay between economic conditions and social organizations. Nevertheless, Ibn Khaldun’s ideas have hugely impressed some of European thinkers in the 19th century prompting them to regard him as the progenitor of sociology, the question remains as to how his ideas and theories have been appropriated by contemporary social scientists in their works. In this lecture series, Prof. Dr. Recep Şentürk explores various aspects of Ibn Khaldun. Some of the topics he’ll address in this series are: Multiplex ontology, multiplex epistemology, multiplex methodology, multiplex human ontology and action, cyclical history: rise and fall of civilizations, good governance: circle of justice. We hope this series would be an exciting one and will enable us to understand Ibn Khaldun's in a much more wider perspective.
