"Garand Thumb" is NO fun! Granted, as has been pointed out, if you get your thumb out of there quickly, you can load successfully without losing your thumb. The main reason this technique I'm showing is taught (And I use it always) is that it saves your thumb whenever you are messing with your M1 Garand, whether you are not getting the bolt back all the way, unloading the rifle, just checking the action, loading a partially loaded clip, etc. Probably most commonly, one gets his or her thumb caught when just working the bolt on an empty chamber, due to not getting the bolt back into the lock position. The Garand is wonderful, but the action and loading system is a bit odd, which results in a better chance of getting "Garand Thumb" in some way when trying to get the gun locked back, loaded, or whatever. 🤍 🤍 Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! 🤍 The M1 Garand ran great in testing, but as soon as Springfield began to crank out production-line guns a mysterious problem appeared. If the top round in the clip was on the right-hand side, the 7th round in the clip would often run askew and malfunction. Where did this very odd problem come from, and why the connection to how the clip was loaded? In a classic example of "guns are hard" going from prototypes to production line tooling, Springfield had to figure out the problem while the War Department was busy sending hundreds of problem rifles to Camp Perry for public demonstration... If there's one military rifle that is a must have for any collection, it is the M1 Garand. It was a very innovative rifle for the timeframe leading up to WW2. Being that they are highly sought after, they are very expensive... unless you know where to look. There's a government charted non-profit organization called The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). They promote firearms safety and marksmanship. In their stores and on their website, they sell M1 Garands, M1903s, Krags, and a few other military surplus weapons and accessories. The M1s they have are some of the cheapest you can find. There's a catch though... you have to meet their eligibility requirements, which are quite simple. The sad part is, not many people know of the CMP and we continuously see people getting ripped off.
