BYD Dolphin, Veel enigszins betaalbare elektrische auto's zijn er nog niet. Ja, Renault biedt de Zoe aan, MG de MG4, Opel en Peugeot de elektrische versies van de Corsa en de 208, maar die zijn duurder en er zit levertijd op. Verder heeft Volkswagen heeft de ID.2 aangekondigd, maar daar zullen we nog zo'n twee jaar op moeten wachten. Deze Dolphin van BYD vult dus een beschikbaar gat in de markt. De Chinese EV heeft geen bijzonder vernieuwend design, en verzet ook geen bakens op het gebied van laadinfrastructuur, wel is het een net een rijdende, comfortabele en voldoende ruime middenklasser, van het formaat Volkswagen Golf. De Europese auto-industrie biedt de kostenbewuste privé-rijder niet al te veel keus in betaalbare elektrische auto’s. Ja, aangekondigd zijn er zat, zoals de Volkswagen ID.2. Maar BYD duikt nu al slim in dat gat, met de Dolphin, die eind dit jaar in Nederland in de verkoop gaat en waar e-Drivers.com al mee heeft kunnen rijden. Hoewel, rijden, we hebben er bepaald geen roadtrip mee gemaakt. Net als de test met de Seal, elders te vinden op deze site, speelde de rit met de 4,29 meter lange Dolphin af op Parcmotor Castelloni; een Spaans circuit. Klaarblijkelijk zijn Chinese fabrikanten nogal angstig aangelegd, want veel meer dan een aantal slalomtestjes werd ons niet gegund. Maar goed, de basiskarakteristiek hebben we daar wel uit kunnen herleiden. De voorwielaangedreven Dolphin voelt vooral erg comfortabel aan. Zijn 204 pk sleuren behoorlijk aan de voorwielen als je er volop van gebruikmaakt. Een elektromotor levert nou eenmaal direct en relatief veel kracht, iets dat bij een voorwielaangedreven auto direct voelbaar is in de besturing. Vanaf 30 mille Eerst even kijken naar de prijzen. Rond de dertig mille zijn er in Nederland, zoals gezegd, niet al te veel elektrische auto’s verkrijgbaar. Renault levert een Zoe, MG de MG4 en Volkswagen heeft beloofd ergens in 2025 de ID.2 in de showroom te hebben. Peugeot verkoopt een elektrische 208 en Opel een Corsa met dezelfde aandrijflijn, Nissan een Leaf, maar die zijn duurder en vooral op de Peugeot zit behoorlijk wat levertijd. BYD belooft een prijsrange van tussen de 30 en 40.000 euro, waarbij het belangrijk is te weten dat die basisprijs niet geldt voor de versie met 60 kWh accu. Met die auto reden wij. Dankzij 204 pk is hij vlot zat en zit er een rijbereik in van 427 kilometer, op papier. De prijs van deze versie ligt vermoedelijk dicht bij de 40.000 euro. In stark contrast to the petrol car market, where cheap runabouts are easy to come by, those wanting to switch to electric power have precious few to choose from. However, that could be about to change with the arrival of cars like the BYD Dolphin. Thanks to low production costs and what’s known in the industry as a ‘vertical supply’ chains (which means one company builds and makes everything from the microchips to the mirrors) Chinese brands are perfectly placed to brings their products to the market at prices that European carmakers simply can’t match. The Dolphin is set to follow the Atto 3 into UK showrooms by the end of 2023 and has the potential to be a real game-changer. With precious few rivals (the MINI is set to be replaced, the Fiat 500e is gorgeous but expensive and the Renault Zoe (complete with an alarming zero star EuroNCAP safety rating) has long since passed its prime. In many ways, the Dolphin is aiming at an open goal. Equipped with a 60kWh battery and with a WLTP range of 265 miles, the £27,000 (estimated) big supermini could be an unbeatable package. We first saw the prototype of the EA1, or Dolphin, during the BYD factory tour a few months ago, and now Elliot takes one out for a drive to see if this could well be the best small, affordable electric car around. This is a well-built, all purpose little city car built on BYD's new 3.0 Ocean platform and using blade batteries, one of the safest battery options available. The design is sharp and funky and, while some of the features might be a little basic, this car is full of cool tech including vehicle to load capability, and delivers amazing value for money. BYD are working at speed to get these cars to market with the EA1 confirmed as the first city car that will get sent overseas. With legacy car manufacturers like VW announcing their affordable and small electric cars won't be available until 2025, in the race to transition the masses to electric, BYD will be hard to catch. BYD are following up their new Yuan Plus / Atto 3 SUV with an even cheaper, smaller electric car in December 2022. It will be called the BYD Atto 2 locally, but overseas, it is called the Dolphin or EA1. Sized like a Toyota Yaris or Mazda 2, the Dolphin has the same 2720mm wheelbase as the Atto 3, but it’s only 4 metres long. Which is tiny! Available with a 30kWh or 45kWh battery overseas, we think Australia will only get the big battery paired to a 130kW power output and front-wheel drive.
