Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. You might always not have an emergency kit with you, but there’s one thing you, me, and probably most other people on this planet will not leave the house without. That’s right, our phones! Yeah, you might be addicted to your phone, but it could end up saving your life in an emergency! You can call 911 in North America or 112 in Europe even if the phone is blocked, deactivated, or it has no sim card inside! But let’s go a little more extreme. Imagine your phone has run out of power. If you can’t use it as intended, then just take it apart! A smartphone is full of survival treasures: the screen, wires, battery, chips. All of them will make your life much easier if you’re alone in the wilderness with nothing but a dead phone in your hand. It can be a razor blade, a needle, a fishing line, or a short survival instruction in a plastic bag. - Almost any battery, including the one in your smartphone, can be used to start a fire. Put one end of the wire on the positively charged node of the battery and the other on the negative one. It’ll immediately glow red-hot, so your time is limited! - Use the screen to reflect sun- or moonlight. Sun reflections can be seen over long distances, just like a flashlight! - Even the oldest cellphone models have a magnet in them and a piece of wire that can serve as a needle for the compass. You’ll need about ½ to 1 inch of a metallic wire. - Phones are full of hard metal parts that can be sharpened on a rock and used as a weapon or knife. And a sharp tool like that can be a key to surviving in the wild. - If you don’t think you’re fast enough to “spear” your seafood dinner, then use some of those small sharp pointy parts in your phone as “hooks” for fishing. - If you’ve got a bad cut on your arm or leg, you can use the cable to your ear- or headphones as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. - Family Locator and similar apps link the phones of your family members into one network. It’ll show your location on a map so that your loved ones know where you are and how to find you. - Emergency apps like SOS+ let you push an alarm button on your phone so that all the people in your emergency contact list will know that something has happened to you. - There’s an app called SaveMePro that lets you call 911 without having to actually dial the number! - If you’re heading to the mountains, be sure to download the Uepaa! The app that lets your smartphone work as a transmitter that sends a signal for up to 1,500 ft. - Facebook Safety Check works automatically if you have the Facebook app on your phone. The app determines if you’re in a disaster zone and sends you a special request. When you hear a police siren blaring around the corner, you’re already expecting to see a sedan painted in certain colors rushing past you. But have you ever wondered why exactly police cars are painted in colors they use? In fact, there are plenty of reasons for that in any given country. Let’s take the USA and Canada for example. When first North American police cars appeared in the early 1900s, pretty much all automobiles were painted black, and law enforcers weren’t any exception. SUMMARY: - A monochrome design proved to be very efficient: people would instantly recognize a police car as such, and it was also not hard to give it another paint job in case it was given to a detective or an undercover officer. - With the appearance of vinyl decals, however, it became increasingly easy to paint a car in whatever colors you wanted. - Originally, most police cars in Europe and the UK were white with distinct markings on them in either black, blue, or red. - But then, in the 1990s, the revolution came: the Battenburg markings. Developed in the UK, this distinct pattern became a standard for the British, Australian, and many of the European police cars. - The markings look like alternating squares of two different colors — kinda like a chess board. - The reason for such a radical redesign is simple enough: making the emergency services highly visible. - Only the emergency services are allowed to bear them, which makes these vehicles immediately recognizable even in the heavy traffic. - In the Czech Republic, for example, most police vehicles have striped decals running along the bottom of the side of the car. - When light-reflecting stripes are put lower on the body of a car, they always get enough light to be seen for what they are. - But probably the most visible police cars ever reside in Dubai. The police force in that wealthy city has perhaps the most expensive set of vehicles in the world. - Dubai creates a picture of the richest and most luxurious city in the world, and having their police officers drive around in Lamborghinis and Ferraris does a lot to add to this image. - Police vehicles are generally more powerful than those available to the public. All around the world, governments place special orders for their police cars. - There’s one thing the police have that makes almost every car chase a success: communication. And that’s the only real advantage of the police cars.
