Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. Avoid going too deep with your knees from the start, since this can injure your lower back. - The most common mistake with shoulder raises is believing that the higher you go with the weights, the more effective the exercise will be. - When you’re on the treadmill, avoid the temptation of holding onto the handrails – it makes running easier, and thus less effective, and can mess up your posture as you hunch over the machine. - If you’re one of those people, but aren’t seeing any results in your abdominal muscles, you might just be doing crunches the wrong way. Don’t tuck your chin into your chest like many people do; this strains the neck. - Triceps dips won’t give you the shoulder injury that many people fear, if you do them the right way. Keep your torso and butt close to the bench, step, or chair you’re working out on. - When you row just with your arms, you’re exposing your upper body to too much pressure and can injure your back and shoulders. Try to split your efforts in a proportion of 60% going from your legs, and the remaining 40 percent from your core and arms. - Stretching the elbows too far out, moving with your hips instead of your whole body, bending your back and neck, and going only halfway down are the most common mistakes people make while doing pushups. - Bicep curls won’t do you much good if you curl your wrists upwards while exercising, drop the weights down too quickly, or swing them up, engaging your shoulders and back instead. - As you extend your arms behind your neck, you’re giving your triceps a great workout. You can do it either with an EZ bar attachment, or a rope, but in any case, make sure you lock your elbows tight to your ribs. - Probably the biggest surprise on the list – pull-ups and chin-ups - are the exercises most people do wrong, just because they believe there’s no way to mess them up. In fact, if you’re swinging your body as you move up and down, don’t brace your core and legs, and flop around - you are, indeed, doing it wrong. Suppose we let our life satisfaction depend on things challenging to obtain. In that case, we set ourselves up for stress, discontent, and insecurity. We tend to worry a lot about not having what we want, losing what we have, and the future not playing out as we desire. A much better alternative would be a minimalist mindset of abundance. If we experience no shortage in getting our needs met, we’ll quickly achieve a state of contentment. And the quickest way to reach abundance is by downgrading our needs. The less you want, the more you have. And when we have plenty, we care less about gain and loss; we’re less stressed about missing out and less fearful of change. This video delves into the benefits of being satisfied with little, how this leads to a more carefree life, and how we can experience abundance instead of scarcity through a minimalist mindset.
