Subscribe: 🤍 The animated Last Airbender series is one of the greatest of all time. Weirdly enough, it didn’t get the respect it really deserved until all of us rewatched the series as adults fully able to grasp the complexities we took for granted the first time it premiered on Nickelodeon. In retrospect, it’s kind of hard to have the proper respect for a story on par with the likes of The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Harry Potter when it’s sandwiched between reruns of Spongebob Squarepants and The Fairly Oddparents. There’s nothing wrong with either of those, but they are nowhere near Aang and the gang’s level. The story of Aang, Katara, Prince Zuko, Uncle Iroh, Sokka, and Toph’s struggles against the likes of Fire Lord Ozai, Princess Azula and Admiral Zhao could be considered about as perfect as perfect gets. Three seasons of amazing character building, lore and epic showdowns that were greater than we could truly perceive as kids. That’s why rewatching the series makes it better and better because you catch all the little details you wouldn’t have noticed as a kid. Those include things like the character's sleeping habits, their ironic final fates, what their hobbies truly say about them and how scenes were composed. Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. This video (Wu-wei | The Art of Letting Things Happen) serves as a humble attempt to make the depth of this philosophical idea clear and practical. How to stay safe while traveling? Now and then magazines, newspapers, and websites publish lists of the safest and the most dangerous travel destinations. But in fact, there’s always a chance of being robbed or attacked in any country in the world. When you’re unfamiliar with your surroundings, it can make you vulnerable to people looking to take advantage of you. Before going on a trip to another city or country, it’s better to consider your safety in advance. Luckily, there are some great hacks you can use to make your travels safe and worry-free, like putting a glass on the door handle of your hotel room! That way, if someone turns the knob as you’re sleeping, the glass will fall and alert you that someone has opened the door. - Before going on your trip, download translated phrases from language apps. That way, in case you can’t access the Internet, you’ll still know how to say things like, “Where’s the bathroom?” - Use a second wallet in addition to your regular one as a “dummy wallet.” You can even fill it with fake cash or plastic cards so that it looks legit. If you get pickpocketed or, even worse, mugged in the street, the perp won’t make off with your real wallet. - In the hustle and bustle of travel, it’s pretty easy to lose important documents like your license or passport, especially when you’re taking them in and out of your bag to show authorities. If you’re worried about losing these precious documents, scan them and email the copies to yourself. - Choosing a room between the 2nd and 4th floors puts you at less risk of being robbed. That’s because thieves typically hit the first or ground floor since it’s easier to get away fast. - Even if you’re not around, leaving the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door makes staff and potential thieves think that you’re in there. If you want to take things a step further, turn your TV on at a low volume and leave it on when you head out. - There have actually been cases of people being spied on and even filmed through these peepholes! This is a total violation of privacy! So by taping some paper over the peephole of your hotel room door, you can really protect yourself. - Hotel safes are a great way to keep your jewelry, money, and important documents secure, right? Believe it or not, they’re actually the first things thieves go for when robbing a room. - When you’re traveling, you’ll stumble upon a number of cafes, bookshops, and restaurants with open Wi-Fi. While this is super convenient, it’s also super unsafe. - When getting into a cab while traveling, don’t ever say that you’re a tourist. This immediately makes you a target! The driver may assume you don’t know anything about your surroundings and take advantage of you, like driving longer to hike up your fare. For example, Coca-Cola was surprisingly invented by John Pemberton, who had a medical degree and was a pharmacist. Pemberton's French Wine Coca was initially used as a remedy for severe pains, headache, and as a nerve tonic. According to popular legends, potato chips were invented by accident. One claims they were invented in 1853 by a chef at a luxurious New York restaurant. French fries were one of the specials at this restaurant and people seemed to love them. But there was one customer who wasn’t satisfied with the quality, complaining they were too thick. George deliberately made his next batch of fries paper-thin. These fries were so thin, it was impossible to eat them with cutlery. Surprisingly, the finicky eater loved the dish. Suppose we let our life satisfaction depend on things challenging to obtain. In that case, we set ourselves up for stress, discontent, and insecurity. We tend to worry a lot about not having what we want, losing what we have, and the future not playing out as we desire. A much better alternative would be a minimalist mindset of abundance. If we experience no shortage in getting our needs met, we’ll quickly achieve a state of contentment. And the quickest way to reach abundance is by downgrading our needs.
